Walla Walla built its reputation on sweet onions long before it built one on wine, but the wine came to define it. More than a hundred wineries now sit in the surrounding valley, and downtown's historic brick buildings house tasting rooms instead of the feed stores they once were.
It is a slower kind of trip than most of this region, built around long lunches, vineyard drives, and a walkable downtown rather than trailheads. Whitman College gives the town a bit of a college-town energy alongside the wine crowd.
