Hood River is small, but it sits in one of the most dramatic spots in the whole region, right where the Columbia River cuts through the Cascades. The steady gorge winds turned it into a windsurfing and kiteboarding destination, and on a summer afternoon the river is dotted with sails.
It is also fruit country. The Hood River Valley south of town is covered in orchards, and the historic Fruit Loop drive is worth an afternoon even if you never touch a windsurfing board. Multnomah Falls and a string of other waterfalls are a short drive west along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Not at all. The town has orchards, waterfalls, and a walkable downtown with breweries and tasting rooms. Watching the windsurfers from a riverside deck is entertainment enough for most visitors.
About an hour east on Interstate 84, making it an easy day trip or a good first stop on a Columbia River Gorge road trip.
