High desert, craft beer, and Mount Bachelor at your back

Bend sits on the dry side of the Cascades, which means it gets the mountains without the coast's rain. The Deschutes River runs right through downtown, lined with breweries that helped earn Bend its reputation as one of the best beer towns in the country.

Mount Bachelor is a half hour away for skiing or summer hiking, and the Cascade Lakes Highway strings together a dozen alpine lakes west of town. It is an outdoor town first, and everything downtown is built around getting people back outside quickly.
